9rules Ad Network Buzz

Friday, January 6th, 2006 by MR

It’s only been a few days since we launched 9rules Communities, and already people are singing the praises of it, which is totally flattering. The only opinions that truly matter to us are our members’, and they have been giving it the thumbs up all week (and for the past month since when we first spoke to them about the idea.) I’m really stoked that our members and readers like what we’ve come out with, and I’m even more excited to see what they think of everything we’re working on now, to come out in a few weeks. Anyway, enough of the preliminary stuff. On to the rumor mill :)

9rules Ad Network

Paul was interviewed the day of our big 9rules launch by well-known marketing site ClickZ News, and in that interview Paul happened to drop the bomb:

“Our framework allows for a number of possibilities, but most importantly it is helping us lead into the ad network that we will be launching this year for our member sites,” Scrivens told ClickZ News. “In everything we do, we have our members and readers in mind first and foremost. These changes will make the 9rules Network even more useful for our readers. For advertisers what this will mean is targeted advertising on a number of blogs that they can count on being high-quality.”

It’s true, we’re indeed launching an advertising network. This platform will allow advertisers to reach out to our highly influential 9rules community, and target the very best weblogs in the world on a variety of topics. This next step has been in the works for awhile now, however we didn’t want to divulge our plans until 1) 9rules Communities was launched, and 2) our members were fully aware of our intentions. Now that things are moving smoothly ahead, we thought it the right time to tell people of our plans.

Other marketing sites that picked up on the story include MarketingVOX, AdJab, Buy it or DIE!, and a few others. We’ve already been approached by some large ad purchasing companies to see what the dealio is. Things are definitely off and running.

I’d just like to remind the blogosphere that I predicted it first. Anyone wanting me to pick other trends or tell you your future can ring my info line at $5.95 a minute.

Christian Watson Says:

Mike, this is exciting news for us 9rules members. I, for one, am looking forward to seeing what you’ve cooked up!

I wonder if this will mean any changes in the terms of service for the members of the 9rules community?

Mike Rundle Says:

Hey Christian, I can assure you right now that any and all advertising on member sites will be completely optional and up to the author. We aren’t about to force advertising on anybody, especially since we value quality content above advertiser dollars.

Many of our members have approached us asking for ways they could monetize their site and writing, and up till now, we really haven’t had any options for them. Hopefully the ad network will help with that.

Brian Breslin Says:

so are you all building a custom service for this? or using something off the shelf like phpadsnew? Second Q: is this going to be a cpm, cpc, or cpa system?

Mike Rundle Says:

Hey Brian - We’re actually going to use a combination of custom stuff and open source apps for the ad network. No point in reinventing the wheel so to speak :)

As for the model of payment, we’re still talking with members and ad purchasing companies about the best way to proceed. The payment structure is pretty important to get right, so we’re doing a lot of homework.

Paul Scrivens Says:

Brian: I can tell you that I am leaning heavily towards offering both CPM and Time-based (weekly, monthly, etc) options.
