9charities: Trying To Give Back

I talk with my guys at 9rules a lot about the big picture. Right now many people see 9rules as a blog network, however we never really saw it as that even when we dreamed the idea up about one year ago. We’re moving our way towards building a community of the most brilliant people on the web — whether they’re businesswomen, designers, developers, entrepreneurs, technologists, scientists, or anyone else. Forget the concept of just a blog network, 9rules is now a place that can build on the combined talents of our massive community. Anyway, back to the big picture :)

Design is something I could never see myself stopping, regardless of what else I have going on in my life or how much money I had. To me, putting pixels on the screen is like playing golf — nobody pays me to play golf, and I don’t care, I’ll play golf the rest of my life. It’s the same type of thing with design, if I was a multi-millionaire and never had to work again, I’d probably be designing more stuff than I am currently just because I love it so much.

Today’s announcement at 9rules about our next big project — 9charities.org — is the big picture stuff that I’m really looking forward to. 9charities is our way of using the resources of the 9rules Network to give free web consulting, hosting, and design to nine non-profit organizations per year. Our members will be divided up into teams, and each team will work with a charitable organization and provide them with the professional web presences they desperately need. I’ll be sticking my head in some of the projects and giving visual direction, just because I like getting my hands dirty like that :) 9charities will have a much larger impact on people’s lives than the 9rules Network does, which to me is the real big picture: the impact that 9rules and our members will have on the world around us.

Some 9charities-related links that have popped up already (Update: I’m adding to this list as I find them!). Thanks for the great support everyone:

Looks awesome, can’t wait for this to get off the ground.

The 9rules Network is made up of the best web talent in the world today

Shouldn’t you change that statement on the 9Charities website though. The 9rules Network isn’t made up of the best web talent in the world today, it’s made of some of the best web talent.

There are many designers who are not with 9Rules who are a lot more skilled than the 9Rules Network members.

The statement is quite controversial, misleading and inaccurate.

  2. Mike Rundle says:

Chris, that statement wasn’t meant to be controversial, it just means that a lot of 9rules Network members are highly respected members of the web community. I would never say that all the best web talent is in 9rules, or that if you’re not in 9rules you’re not part of the best web talent on the web, which are both totally inaccurate.

You’re right though, there are a ton of talented designers who aren’t in 9rules (a lot of my friends aren’t: Doug, Dan, JZ, Stan, etc.) so trust me, I never meant to belittle anyone who’s not in 9rules :)

  3. Chris Gwynne says:

That’s cool, it was just something that bugged me when checking the site out :)

It’s not just bloggers who can design then hehe.

  4. No Mike, it’s me that I thank you all…
I’m in a non profit organization called 12dicembre (http://www.12dicembre.org/), located in Italy and born to remember two dear friends o us, so I know how much important is this decision to help charitable organizations in their communication. Helping them to be more effective, you’ll help the world to be more ethic and right.
Hope this project will grow up…
By my side I just wanted to spread the word…
    Thank you again, guys!

Love the new logo, and how it’s a take on the 9rules logo! The star immediately makes me think of hope.

  6. Russell says:

    amazing!

those that have more should have less, so that those who have nothing can have something.

not only have you guys setup a great network (i kill some serious time reading the blogs of 9rules members), but you’re also giving to those that help others.

    kudos to you. really.

  7. KarmaDude says:

Great idea, and good luck with it.

One charity I contribute to, in terms of design work, is inveneo.org.

  8. Jeff Smith says:

I wholeheartedly commend you guys for making the effort to reach beyond the ‘local’ community to help out those that could really use it.

Would there be any chance for those of use that aren’t currently 9rules members to pitch in and help out with the cause?

  9. Judi Sohn says:

Hi there…this is 2 years old and I was just wondering, “what every happened to…” I’m bummed to see 9charities.org never materialized. What happened?

  10. Mike Rundle says:

Hey Judi, all we can say is that we got busy with other things and that we dropped the ball. We’re hoping to pick it back up again with the relaunch of 9rules in the coming weeks so hopefully it’s a project that will finally see the light of day.
