LAUNCH: Niall Kennedy’s Weblog

Thursday, February 9th, 2006 by MR

After working with The Gigga Man on his site, it only seemed fair that I redesign his buddy Niall Kennedy’s site as well ;) Niall’s launch entry has some really positive comments so far, which makes my week much better. Here’s a screenie:

Niall Kennedy's Blog

The Deets

The site has a simple design, but I’m really digging how it came out — especially the header. Typophiles will recognize his new logo font is Bureau Grotesque set in multiple weights; Mike Diesel recognized it immediately so my hat is off to him. Other cool features include the calendar-style date box next to the entry titles (which took a bit of CSS maneuvering) and the nifty tag listing at the end of the entry. The iconography throughout the site is courtesy Mark James as I’ve been using a lot of his icon work lately with clients and 9rules as well, that guy’s work is fantastic. There are some quirks in IE6 I have to get to still, but for the most part it’s good to go.

Oh, and I quickly redesigned the Business Logs projects page — much less text, much larger screenshots. I found that prospective clients really don’t care about the “case study” stuff I had up there before, they just want to get down to the nitty-gritty question of, “can you design cool stuff?” So designers out there, what do you think? Should the “work/portfolio” section of a business site even have case studies anymore? I’m testing the waters here, so let me know.

I’ve asked the same question in different forums and the answers always ended up coming out even for me. In the end it’s going to be personal preference or a mix of both case study and image only portfolio.

Paul Says:

Is part of the arrangement of working with Business Logs that you get a short bit of text posted to the front page about your site? Sounds like an extra piece of good publicity thrown in for “free”.

Mike Rundle Says:

Paul, nope it’s not part of the deal….. Niall did it on his own. I’m not complaining one bit though :)

Mike - you continue to kick ass. Another gorgeous blog design.

Mike Rundle Says:

Thanks Geof!!

Eks Says:

What’s your secret behind the color choices? Plus, your style of Typography is simply amazing.

Paul Says:

Mike: I was referring to getting Niall’s page on the front of Business Logs, not him mentioning the new design on his site. :)

Mike Rundle Says:

Eks, I think I generally gravitate towards colors that are just pleasing to me. I work with a lot of greens in my designs, because I have this theory that green is the best color on the web as far as the emotional response it generates. Green always makes me feel calm, and I love the organic aura it seems to give off. Other colors on Niall’s site are pulled from the green, and red + green always gives it a nice contrast (when not used on top of each other!)

Thanks for the compliment too!

Mike Rundle Says:

Haha Paul, now I gotcha ;) I’m not used to Business Logs getting that sort of credit so it caught me off-guard lol.

Maybe I will start charging clients for their launch entries…. I’ll just add it to the bill like car dealers tack on a $59 “free car wash” when you buy a new car haha.

What the hell would we do without Trebuchet?

;o))

Another great design! I have to say, those little calendar things you’ve done for the post dates are so hot.
