Flock Scraps It All, Starting Over

Normally when you read a blog entry title like “Flock Scraps It All” you’d think it was just troll bait or a joke, but I don’t think it is this time. I just got done reading “…Wanted to Destroy Something Beautiful” by Flocker Chris Messina, and I get the impression that the team is throwing their Flock browser into the scrap pile and starting something brand new. Let’s hope their investors were consulted first ;)

Chris’ entry is pretty nebulous, so what do you guys think it means?

  1. Cryptic yes. Scrapping Flock? Not exactly.

I was simply using the metaphor of ‘urban interior decorating’ to say something about our design approach to Flock.

We’re not deviating from our original vision, only clarifying it and pushing some pixels around. In the case where pixels were getting in the way of building a useful or intuitive interface, we’ve made some changes and continue to evolve the workflows.

Thanks for your concern, but to the contrary of what the photo might imply, Flock is all well and good, and we’re not going anywhere. We’ve just now got 50% more air in our garage!

  2. jakedahn says:

next time, read the post, he was talking about Flock HQ!

  3. Mike Rundle says:

Sorry Jake, that post says absolutely nothing about the Flock headquarters or how they’re rearranging their garage. For those that come to that link without actively reading any of the other Flocker blogs, there is no backstory to latch on to, no context to pull from.

If you read the comments that other people left at that entry, you’ll see the same “WTF” response that I just had.

  4. Duncan says:

What it means to me is that these guys need to lay off the drugs a bit!

  5. Duncan: nah, just after hour margaritas. And beer. ;)

  6. mdipi says:

He was drunk when he posted this as he stated in a later entry. I don’t know how seriously it can be taken due to that fact.

    Mike

  7. Not like there’s anything wrong with being drunk of course… except apparently when you wax Fight Clubian and post cryptic photos on your blog at 3am.

Oh well. Lesson learned. Who knew the blogosphere took everything so seriously!

  8. Martin says:

Geez, reading that without context didn’t come across too well. I reckon Chris’s comments afterwards are simple damage-control (and probably investor “encouraged”).

Sorry Chris (at least for being all official-like), but in the big-biz world, you have to be more careful with what you say…
