Valleywag Launches
Thursday, February 2nd, 2006 by MR
Nick Denton’s first foray into the world of tech gossip is now live, and the site is called Valleywag, written by Nick Douglas of Blogebrity. I’m hoping that this blog on blogs is less lame that the dozens of other blog on blogs people have come up with, but we’ll just have to wait and see how it pans out. And what’s with the fuzzy pixel fonts in the logo? Not only did pixel fonts go out with the dodo, but fuzzy pixel fonts are the bane of every designer’s existence. Bane!
Big up to Nick since he writes about 9rules once in awhile. I’m expecting that courtesy to stop immediately, not only because I just busted his chops in this entry, but because he’s a big mothercuffer now and us little guys were his stepping stones. :)

“went out with the dodo..?” fashion victim. lo-rez is the perfect typographic palette to use with a terminal-like green and black interface. the entire thing is vaguely retro. sorry you didn’t get the joke.
additionally, it’s not a bitmapped font. all custom, designed in postscript to emulate lo-rez. at larger scales, each bit is a rounded square, and the pixels in “wag” are connected to increase the difference between the two words. “valley” is drawn after chester’s pixella, and “wag” is based on some of the forms from vivaldi script.

That’s not a pixel font; it just mostly looks like one. The logo’s based off Pixella, which, if you look, is rather lacking in corners. (The block below, though, is in one of the Lo-Resfonts[Oakland].) Crying, “Bane!” seems to assume that the soft edges aren’t desired.
As for pixel fonts going out with the dodo(When was that again?), that may be so within your particular circle and/or experience, nothing more. Bardram at Atomic Media might have a few thoughts on the matter.

Well damn, sounds like you put some work into it! Good job then Patrick, your parade is now rain-free.

I don’t think there is anything to worry about it being a lame blog on blogs considering it’s about tech and Silicon Valley not blogs.
